The Princess and the Frog: new billboards + the first five minutes

I thought I would be taking a break from discussing this movie since I've been doing a lot of it lately. But, I couldn't pass up on sharing five minutes of the film. The billboards from ComingSoon are just a bonus.

The opening five minutes of The Princess and the Frog were unveiled late yesterday and you get a feel for where the movie is headed. The first few minutes are the completed 2D animation in gorgeous color, but after that some of it is the pencil drawn stuff that isn't finished. I wish we could have gotten a completed five minutes, but I suppose it's interesting to get a look at the different stages the animation goes through before it's totally finished.

New posters from Women in Trouble

Carla Gugino plays adult entertainer, Elektra Luxx in Women in Trouble: "A serpentine day in the life of ten seemingly disparate women: a porn star, a flight attendant, a psychiatrist, a masseuse, a bartender, a pair of call girls, etc. All of them with one crucial thing in common. Trouble." Written and directed by Gugino's boyfriend, Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on a Plane), the film is the first in a trilogy that will include Elektra Luxx and Women in Ecstasy.


Women in Trouble has a pretty impressive cast (Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Simon Baker), but, it's the women who get the best roles in the film (Marley Shelton, Adrianne Palicki, Cameron Richardson, Connie Britton, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, and Emmanuelle Chriqui):

"Women in Trouble is a fun addition to the current trend of revisiting and reworking exploitation-film themes in a lighthearted way...There's a certain pleasure in seeing a movie where the men are relegated to the Supportive Spouse and Lust Interest roles, after I've seen so many films where those are the only roles for women." Worst. Poster. EVER: Takers

I almost never talk about poster art. I usually just toss them out for people to look at but I can't help myself with this one. ComingSoon (via FirstShowing) points us to this God awful poster from Takers, starring Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, and Matt Dillon. Oh and that douche Chris Brown is in this as well. The movie has something to do with bank robbers on their last job (gee, I've never heard this plot before). The photos of the actors in the foreground has got to be the worst Photoshop job I have ever seen. The film opens on February 19, 2010.

New Avatar poster

The official Avatar poster featuring Zoe Saldana is now online. Everyone has it, so I'll give the hat tip to Awards Daily this time. The banner from Cannes (also from AD) of the male version of this er...creature is posted below. I honestly couldn't tell the difference until it was pointed out to me. I thought the new poster was just a copy of the banner. Apparently not. This new poster features a female alien that looks like the daughter of Aayla Secura from Star Wars and Panthro from Thundercats. You know what? I still don't quite know what the hell I'm looking at, but I think it's freaking me out.

New Jonah Hex poster unveiled

The new poster was released at Comic-Con (via Yahoo! Movies). It seems to have gone under the radar a bit so far, which is weird, considering the blurry photos of the poster that have made the rounds on the Intertubes over the past day.

Hmmmm....Megan Fox gets top billing, but she revealed last month that her part would be "basically a cameo." So, if it's a cameo the studio is pandering to the horny fanboys and fangirls. If it isn't a cameo, well, then...she may actually get to do some of this "acting" she keeps promising she'll get around to. Anyhoo, the rest of us will have to settle for the destroyed half of Josh Brolin's face:

Poster for It Might Get Loud documentary

For a movie that I've only mentioned in passing, I'm awfully excited about it.

It Might Get Loud is a "documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White." This rad doc first showed up in Toronto last year and is finally looking to hit theaters starting in August. "I've gone through things where I go onstage and the sound guy at sound check comes over and he'll hold the decibel meter and show it to me while we're playing — and it's 127 decibels,” White told Rolling Stone, where this poster debuted today. "That's not good. And I can't even tell. If it's not right there, it feels wimpy, it feels uninspiring...

A Christmas Carol international posters

What a rough day. I've kept it together for a while now, but that Michael Jackson memorial just made me break down. I've dragged myself away from CNN long enough to find these incredible posters for Disney's A Christmas Carol from Awards Daily. The first one is one of the better posters I've seen all year. The film opens on November 6 and features captured performances from Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes, and Fionnula Flanagan.

New 'Precious' teaser poster

The folks over at Awards Daily (via Hitfix) point us to a newly unveiled Precious teaser poster. The film centers around a 16 year old Precious and her abusive mother. It stars Mo'Nique (Gregory Ellwood over at Hitfix calls her performance career altering), newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, and Lenny Kravitz. I've been looking forward to watching this movie all year and waiting four more months feels like an eternity at this point. Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire opens on November 6.

New 'Julie and Julia' poster

This is the final poster for Nora Ephron's film starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. The film is based upon Julia Child's autobiography My Life in France and Julie Powell's book Julie and Julia. The film opens on August 7th and here's a little synopsis for you to get up to speed:

The film follows Powell, a government employee who decides to cook her way through legendary cook Julia Child's classic cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, in one year's time out of her small Queens Kitchen. New poster and trailer for 'Precious'

Lee Daniels' Sundance hit Precious (formerly called Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire) will be making the rounds at Cannes this month. Lionsgate has unveiled the poster (via FirstShowing) and the trailer. It looks amazing, and with a cast that includes Mo'Nique, Lenny Kravitz, Gabby Sidibe, Paula Patton, and Mariah Carey, who is completely unrecognizable.

The folks over at Cinematical warn that Downloading Nancy is "sick", "twisted", and "sadistic". That description just makes it more intriguing to me. Here's more of Cinematical's synopsis:

Our own Erik Davis called it "a sick and twisted rollercoaster ride that climbs fast and drops slowly." What do you mean, Erik? "Basically, Downloading Nancy is about this unhappily married woman (Maria Bello) who meets a guy (Jason Patric) over the internet, falls in love, then asks him to kill her ... slowly ... so she can finally feel something in her life."

Apparently 'Sherlock Holmes' isn't British (or good) enough

The Playlist gives us the rundown of reasons why Sherlock Holmes might be ten kinds of shit. Hack extraordinaire director Guy Ritchie is reportedly giving us a more American style Holmes (translation: Bob Downey's accent is horrible) and Watson. Needless to say, Ritchie will be boiled in oil by his countrymen before the year is out. The trailer was shown at ShowWest in Las Vegas and the audience loved it despite descriptions that seem to scare the crap out of the people over at Playlist. I guess when words like zany or wacky are bandied about there, is pause for concern.




I get the feeling that Sherlock Holmes purists are going to loathe this film. A fun romp does not sound like the sort of description they're inclined to welcome. For the rest of us (I know, I know - what sort of aspiring writer doesn't read Conan Doyle) we'll just have to hope this thing doesn't flat out suck. I'm over halfway through the script and so far I think it's enjoyable and fun. Which means this film is going to turn into a giant franchise and infuriate anyone who loves the books. If this turns out to be pure shit, I'll just watch it for Downey, bad accent and all.

New posters: Public Enemies and Broken Embraces

Here's the new poster for the upcoming Public Enemies with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. If the poster looks oddly familiar to you, Empire Online points out that the poster looks very similar to 2002's Road to Perdition poster. It isn't the most exciting poster in the world, but it's Johneeee:

And there's the new Spanish language poster of Broken Embraces to soothe those of us who live on this side of the world. Weep, Penelope Cruz fans, weep: while Spain gets to watch Broken Embraces this March, North America doesn't get to watch until November.
